ASUU UNIJOS explains strike action

The management of the University of Jos, (UNIJOS) has called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) to suspend its strike in the varsity, stating that 90 per cent of its demands have been met.

The Registrar of the varsity, Mr. Jilli Dandam, on Thursday, November 12, appealed to all members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend their strike in the varsity, stating that the school management has met their requirements.

Dandem disclosed that as soon as the University got the notice of the strike action, they underwent the necessary steps to make sure all issues were rectified.

Dandam said: “Immediately we got the notice of the strike, management initiated moves to settle all the issues in dispute and I am glad to tell you that we have met 90 percent of the requests. So, we expect that ASUU should reciprocate the gesture of the management by going back to classes.

All attempts to have a roundtable discussion with the Academic Staff Union have proved abortive, however a fresh attempt is scheduled for the 13th of November 2015. In the light of the progress made so far, ASUU should resume academic activities, because it is also not justifiable to receive salary while not working.”

The Registrar further urged the lecturers to keep in mind that they also have a responsibility to their students.
